How does membership help coalitions grow and stay financially sustainable?

The National Alliance provides direct support for coalition sustainability — including guidance on identifying and securing funding sources, strategies for growing membership, and support for strengthening administrative and financial operations. Members also gain access to group purchasing guidance that can help unlock market leverage they couldn't achieve on their own.

Caret Caret
What resources do coalition members get access to?

Coalition members gain access to tools and support that most small nonprofits couldn't obtain independently, including:

  • Free benchmarking surveys on topics relevant to coalitions and their employer members
  • Grant opportunities to help fund local projects
  • Free or low-cost education on healthcare policy, benefits strategy, and emerging healthcare challenges
  • Guidance on working with journalists and legislators to increase local visibility and influence
  • Practical resources to evaluate solutions on issues like hospital fair pricing, PBM transparency, and obesity treatments

What subject-matter expertise can members tap into?

Members have access to National Alliance advisors and strategic partners covering a wide range of issues that matter to employers and purchasers, including mental health, health equity, obesity, advanced primary care, oncology, high-cost drugs and treatments, and chronic conditions — with new topics added as the healthcare landscape evolves.

What does the networking look like in practice?

Members participate in both in-person and virtual meetings with healthcare thought leaders, peer coalitions, and national experts. These gatherings are designed for real exchange — benchmarking against peers, sharing what's working locally, and connecting with others who are tackling the same challenges across the country.

Can membership help us have a voice in national healthcare policy?

Yes — and this is one of the most distinctive aspects of National Alliance membership. Members are actively involved in shaping national policies on healthcare and health benefit issues, with the goal of developing positions that can be adopted and applied at the local level. It's a direct pathway from the community to the national conversation.

How does the National Alliance support smaller or newer coalitions?

Smaller and newer coalitions often face the steepest climb — limited staff, tight budgets, and the challenge of proving value to prospective members. The National Alliance specifically helps here by offering guidance on obtaining funding, sharing administrative best practices from peer coalitions, and providing ready-made programs and resources that coalitions can bring directly to their members. You don't have to build everything from scratch.

How does membership help with media visibility?

Getting local media attention for healthcare issues is harder than it sounds — journalists need context, credibility, and a clear story. The National Alliance helps member coalitions build both the skills and the standing to make that happen. Members receive guidance on how to work effectively with journalists, how to frame complex healthcare topics for a general audience, and how to position their coalition as a credible local voice. Greater visibility in local media also helps coalitions attract new employer members and amplify the impact of their work in the community.

Who is eligible to join as a coalition member?

Coalition membership is open to all types and sizes of employer organizations — private sector, public sector, union, and Taft-Hartley organizations. If you're leading or participating in a purchaser-focused coalition and want to connect with a broader national movement, reach out to info@nationalalliancehealth.org or call 202-775-9300 ext. 620.
