Groundbreaking Employer Health Claims Collaborative Previewed at National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions’ Annual Forum

Purchaser-driven database will bring self-funded employers together to maximize health claims data to achieve a more transparent, affordable and healthier marketplace

WASHINGTON – November 10, 2025 – To solve the longstanding challenge employers face in accessing and leveraging actionable health claims data, two nationally recognized nonprofits – National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions (National Alliance) and Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) – have joined forces to launch the Employer Health Claims Collaborative.

Set to go live in January 2026, the Employer Health Claims Collaborative (the Collaborative) is a purchaser-driven database designed to give self-funded employers a clearer view of health care spending, utilization, and benefit performance. By combining the National Alliance’s network of business health coalitions – representing employers who provide coverage for more than 90 million Americans – with HCCI’s deep expertise in data analytics and translation, the initiative aims to reshape how employers use claims data to drive smarter, more sustainable health care decisions.

“Many employers lack access to actionable, comprehensive claims data showing how care is used and what it costs within their own plans,” said Katie Martin, president and CEO of HCCI. “The Collaborative is built by employers, for employers, and will serve as a trusted, mission-driven source of insight into commercial market health care spending.”

The Collaborative is:

  • Trusted – Governed by mission-driven nonprofits.
  • Transparent – Gives employers a clear view of what’s driving costs, how care is delivered, where health challenges lie, and how benefits are performing.
  • Secure – Operates under strict protections, including HIPAA compliance and data de-identification protocols.
  • Actionable – Delivers advanced analytics in digestible formats for employers, policymakers, and researchers.

“By unlocking the power of claims data, we’re helping self-funded employers gain leverage in negotiations, design more effective benefits, and hold vendor partners accountable,” said Shawn Gremminger, president and CEO of the National Alliance. “At the same time, we’re equipping policymakers with credible, employer-backed evidence, enabling researchers to uncover critical trends, and accelerating the shift toward value-based care that flattens cost growth.”
