Over the past several years, the federal government imposed significant new transparency requirements on hospitals, health plans, and insurance brokers. These requirements are now fully in effect, though compliance is not yet universal.

The Policymaker Engagement Best Practices guide builds on the previously provided resources to further support the Fair Price RESET Coalitions in promoting their efforts to address inappropriate pricing for hospital services in their region.

Directly engaging with local, state, and federal policymakers is an effective way to drive change on behalf of your member employers and policymakers. While the policymaking process is complicated and imposing, remember two key facts:

1. You likely know far more about the issues you’re discussing with policymakers and their staff than they know.
2. Policymakers want to hear from their constituents – particularly important employers – regarding critical issues of concern. In providing issue education, you’re helping them do their jobs better.

While constituents and stakeholders can typically request meetings with congressional staff through an informal email directly to the staff member in question, meeting with Members of Congress usually requires a formal request, via email, through their scheduler.
