National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions and Remedy Partners Collaborate to Accelerate Healthcare Payment Reform

Integrated national platform aims to accelerate employer adoption of bundled payments

WASHINGTON and NORWALK, Conn. – June 26, 2018 –  The National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions (National Alliance), a nonprofit network of business coalitions representing more than 12,000 purchasers and 45 million Americans, spending more than $300 billion on healthcare, and Remedy Partners, the nation’s leading episodes of care company, are collaborating to help accelerate development and employer adoption of bundled payments across the country.

The organizations are examining how best to build a national platform that will offer employers a clearer path toward adoption of episode-based payment and benefit design and will test the concept with select coalitions over the next year. The collaboration expands the ability of National Alliance coalitions and their employer/purchaser members to drive change in their respective markets. This platform would establish critical aspects of success in value-based models of care and help coalitions and employers overcome current barriers to episode-based care arrangements.

“We’re exploring an approach that takes advantage of Remedy Partners’ market leadership in bundled payments through Medicare to develop successful risk-based arrangements that can be more easily adopted by local and national employers and purchasers,” said Michael Thompson, National Alliance president and chief executive officer. “Employer-led bundled payment can truly bring about the change required in the broken healthcare market. Working through our regional and national network of member coalitions can enable faster and more seamless execution of episode of care payment models across the country.”

As a key value-based care strategy, bundled payments are an alternative payment model that incents providers to increase coordination and efficiency of care while improving quality and outcomes at lower costs.

“Our goal together is to achieve meaningful and financially relevant payment reform that can identify and reduce inefficiencies and set a new bar for healthcare value across the country,” said Chris Garcia, chief executive officer of Remedy Partners. “By combining our expertise in episode-based payment models and advanced technology infrastructure with the National Alliance’s unprecedented reach to diverse purchasers and key stakeholders, we are working to drive the transformation towards value-based care.”
