About the VBP Guide

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REFERENCE DATABASE IS OUTDATED AND DOES NOT REFLECT INFORMATION GATHERED ON VALUE BASED PURCHASING IN 2015.

Background

The Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Guide is a tool developed by the National Business Coalition on Health to support the critical role purchasers and purchaser-led coalitions play as change agents in improved health and health care. The Guide serves to educate such stakeholders on how they may implement value-based purchasing programs in their own organizations and local communities.

NBCH hosted a webinar introducing the VBP Guide on January 27, 2011. To hear a recording of this webinar, please click here. The slide deck is available here.

VBP Guide Fundamentals

The Guide is organized into chapters. The first five chapters are:

  • Value-Based Benefit Design
  • Physician Performance Measurement & Reporting
  • Physician Payment Reform
  • Foundational Business Diagnostics
  • Health Promotion

We tapped subject matter experts to write the Guide in order to bring you their unique perspectives on key topics and provide a framework for educating employers on value-based purchasing strategies (information about the authors can be found on the “About the Author” page in each chapter).

Within each chapter of the Guide, you’ll find:

  • extensive literature reviews to help identify and understand the published research in support, as well as opposition, to a particular value-based purchasing principle;
  • case studies of employers and coalitions that have implemented programs, including lessons learned;
  • a “Getting Started” section to address the fundamentals to implementing a value-based purchasing program

To navigate throughout the Value-Based Purchasing Guide, please use the Menu on the lefthand column of each page.

We plan to add to the content in these first five chapters as well as offer new chapters on other topics of interest – so be sure to bookmark this site and check back often.

Beyond the material in the individual chapters, the Guide has a Glossary and News Room (both of which are accessible from the Menu on the lefthand column of each page).The terms in the Glossary are also tagged in the text within the Guide -- if you put your mouse over the word, the Glossary definition appears in a pop-up.
